How many ADA porta potties does an event need?

An event open to the public needs at least 5 percent of the porta potties in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than one. That rule comes from section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. Ten units in one spot need one accessible unit. Twenty-one units need two.

What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a ground-level floor with no step and a door about 32 inches wide. Inside are grab bars beside the seat and a 60-inch diameter turning circle. The toilet sits at chair height. The International Symbol of Accessibility is posted on the door.

Where should an accessible unit be placed?

An accessible porta potty belongs on firm, level ground, such as concrete, asphalt or packed dirt, with a clear path from parking or seating. Soft grass and gravel make wheels sink. Leave about 5 feet clear in front of the door so a wheelchair can turn and enter.

Questions people ask before booking

Is a wheelchair-accessible unit only for wheelchair users?

Anyone can use it. Parents with toddlers, guests with walkers and people who need more room often choose it. It is also the only unit where a caregiver can step inside to help. That is why many family parties add one even when no permit asks for it.

Do construction sites need an ADA porta potty?

Units used only by construction workers are exempt from the ADA accessible-toilet rule under section 203.2. A site office that clients or the public visit is different. Ask your general contractor or inspector, and add one accessible unit if visitors use the restroom.

Does the accessible unit have a sink?

Most accessible units carry hand sanitizer but no sink. For hand washing, add a freestanding hand-wash station with a low basin next to the door. LA County health rules also call for one hand sink per four toilets at community events with food.

Can an accessible unit go on a lawn?

A lawn works when the ground is dry and firm. After rain, wheels sink and the door can rack. For winter events between November and March, a driveway, patio or parking pad is the safer spot.
